Community Gardens

A community garden can be one of the most beautiful things the people of your neighborhood can come together to create. The sense of accomplishment and pride that a community garden can bring to a diverse group of people is nothing short of amazing. Very few endeavors have this power, or this universality. Recently, a new show called Community Gardens was showcased.

Educational Benefits

The educational benefits gleaned from a community garden are numerous and long lasting. Many inner city youth have little or no experience with this type of project outside of sterile textbooks. Actually getting out in the middle of a field, feeling the dirt in their hands, the sun of their backs, watching their seeds germinate; these experiences will stay with them for a lifetime.

Food Source

And let us not forget the value of the food itself. Organically grown vegetables are highly nutritious, and often expose people to new or unique varieties they may not have previously sampled. Economically, community gardens not only reduce an individual family’s grocery budget significantly, which can then be invested into entertainment like a new computer!, but also can be expanded into a valuable opportunity for neighborhood economic growth and development. Imagine a vast farmer’s market planted, grown, and sold entirely by members of a happy, close knit group of neighbors.
